The goal of the 2-week externship is to help the extern make an informed decision whether to choose a career in medicine. Helen and I expect this externship to be a very exciting 2 weeks. The extern will be exposed to a variety of medical and surgical specialties (internal medicine, endocrinology, general surgery, neurosurgery, nuclear medicine, pediatrics, and genetics) and types of practices (private and academic). In addition to seeing patients while shadowing an internist, adult endocrinologist and pediatric endocrinologist, the extern will have the opportunity to dress like a surgeon and witness surgery in the operating room, see biopsies of the thyroid gland, and review nuclear medicine images with a radiologist. Finally, the extern will have plenty of opportunities to interact with medical students at Tufts University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School.
